CMA CGM Group has taken a significant step in supporting India’s ambitions in international shipping by officially transferring the CMA CGM Vitoria to the Indian registry. This move aligns with India’s goal to enhance its shipping operations and expand its shipbuilding industry. The vessel, previously registered in Malta, now requires an Indian crew and classification by the Indian Registry of Shipping.
CMA CGM, along with other major shipping firms like Maersk and MSC, is keen on developing operations in India. The company recently hosted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed intentions to register more ships in the country. CMA CGM has investments in key terminals at Nhava Sheva Freeport and Mundra Port, and plans to transfer additional vessels to the Indian flag in the coming months.
Despite challenges such as India’s tonnage tax system and regulatory environment, CMA CGM aims to solidify its presence, operating 19 weekly maritime services to Indian ports. The company has also established a crew management office in Mumbai to support its fleet operations. India’s Directorate General of Shipping facilitated the transfer, indicating potential for further growth in the Indian shipping sector.
