The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) has established a Quick Response Team to manage emergency responses and facilitate the evacuation of Indian seafarers in the Persian Gulf. This initiative, announced by Director General Shyam Jagannathan, aims to provide timely and coordinated support in light of the ongoing conflict in the region, particularly following recent attacks on vessels near Oman that resulted in the deaths of three Indian seafarers.
In the aftermath of these incidents, search operations are underway for crew members missing from the oil tanker MV Skylight. The Indian Embassy in Oman is actively collaborating with local authorities to ensure the safe repatriation of rescued crew members. While Indian-flagged vessels have not yet been targeted, the DGS continues to monitor the situation closely.
The Quick Response Team’s role includes coordinating with maritime authorities for potential ship-to-shore evacuations should further attacks occur. Stakeholders have been urged to exercise heightened vigilance, conduct voyage-specific risk assessments, and maintain enhanced security measures. Vessels operating in the region are advised to ensure continuous communication and report any suspicious activities promptly, while operators are encouraged to reassess transit through high-risk areas based on current conditions.
