Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited has secured approval to establish a floating dry dock and launching facility at Nhava, near Mumbai. The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) endorsed this proposal during its July meeting. Established in 1960, Mazagon Dock employs over 6,000 skilled workers and indirectly supports many more through its supply chain.
Currently, the shipyard is engaged in constructing P17, P15A, and P15B class warships, along with six Scorpene-class submarines. The company has about 31 defense vessel orders and plans to expand its capabilities to build next-generation destroyers, helicopter dock ships, and aircraft carriers. The dry dock will comprise six blocks being built in Bharuch, Gujarat, which will be assembled into a 180-meter floating structure in Nhava, utilizing a 13,585 square meter area.
According to the MCZMA minutes, a temporary facility for assembly will be set up on undeveloped land at the Nhava yard, with plans for dismantling post-launch in March 2026. An Environmental Impact Assessment highlighted favorable conditions for the facility and reported minimal impact on tidal regimes and local ecosystems.
