The Plate Cutting Ceremony for Yard 16404, the fourth of six Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) being built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), was held in Mumbai today. These indigenously designed vessels, measuring 117 meters, can reach speeds of up to 23 knots and have an operational range of 5,000 nautical miles.
The NGOPVs are equipped with advanced technologies such as AI-based predictive maintenance systems, remote piloted drones, and integrated management systems, enhancing the ICG’s capability to secure India’s extensive maritime domain. Each vessel will accommodate 11 officers and 110 personnel.
Contracted on December 20, 2023, under the ‘Buy (Indian-IDDM)’ category, the NGOPV project aligns with the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, emphasizing self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Director General (Technical) of the ICG Eastern Seaboard, Inspector General NG Raveendran, along with MDL’s Executive Director (Shipbuilding), A. Vinod, and other senior officials. This initiative highlights India’s commitment to bolstering its defense manufacturing capabilities and enhancing the ICG’s effectiveness in safeguarding national maritime interests.
