India Highlights Maritime Security at UNSC

India emphasized the importance of maritime security and counter-terrorism during a recent UN Security Council (UNSC) debate. Speaking on May 22, 2025, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, stated that these issues are crucial to the nation’s security and economic interests amid evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific.

With a vast coastline and a significant seafaring community, India is committed to acting as a responsible maritime power. The ambassador noted that the country is enhancing its maritime strategy to address emerging threats effectively. This commitment was presented during a high-level open debate on "Strengthening Maritime Security through International Cooperation for Global Stability," led by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

India further asserted that maritime security is vital for economic growth, as it directly impacts critical trade routes, energy supplies, and broader geopolitical interests. The country’s approach aims to safeguard its maritime interests while contributing to global stability.
