Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has reiterated India’s goal of becoming a leading maritime powerhouse during an Infrastructure Conclave in New Delhi. He outlined the government’s roadmap for transforming port infrastructure, enhancing inland waterways, and modernizing logistics to meet global standards. Sonowal emphasized the critical role of the maritime sector, with a majority of India’s import-export cargo being handled through ports. Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, initiatives have been introduced to modernize and streamline operations in the maritime domain.
One of the key initiatives highlighted by Sonowal is the Sagarmala Programme, aimed at developing port infrastructure, improving connectivity, and fostering coastal community development. With over 850 projects worth Rs 5.8 lakh crore identified, the initiative focuses on enhancing trade efficiency and economic growth. Private sector participation is also emphasized, with a robust Public-Private Partnership model in place to attract investments and drive infrastructure development in the sector.
Sonowal addressed concerns about inland water transport by detailing plans to integrate major rivers into a unified transport network. He mentioned ongoing dredging activities, jetty construction, and the development of multi-modal terminals to facilitate seamless cargo movement. Additionally, he announced the construction of two mega ports in Maharashtra and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, signaling India’s commitment to revolutionizing its maritime trade and global logistics. The integration of digital technology and AI-driven logistics to enhance operational efficiency and security at ports was also highlighted as part of India’s journey towards maritime dominance.
