The ministry has approved the establishment of a greenfield shipbuilding cluster in Porbandar district, along with a ship repair facility at Vadinar in the Gulf of Kutch. This initiative marks a significant step in enhancing India’s maritime capabilities.
The proposed shipbuilding cluster will span nearly 2,000 acres and will include advanced shipyards, ancillary manufacturing units, and shared infrastructure. Additionally, it will feature centers dedicated to capability development, ensuring a comprehensive approach to shipbuilding.
This project aims to produce large commercial vessels, boasting an impressive annual production capacity of 1.2 to 1.5 million gross tonnage (GT). This expansion is expected to bolster India’s domestic shipbuilding industry significantly.
Furthermore, the initiative positions Gujarat as a key player in the construction of heavy-tonnage vessels, potentially transforming the region into a prominent hub for maritime activities. The development aligns with the government’s vision to enhance the country’s shipbuilding capacity and foster economic growth in the sector.
