Gujarat is poised to enhance its maritime tourism with the modernization of 17 lighthouses throughout the state, transforming these traditional navigational beacons into vibrant centers of culture, education, and recreation. This initiative is part of a broader national effort by the Centre to develop lighthouses that hold historical and architectural significance as appealing tourist destinations.
The lighthouses at locations such as Mandvi, Rawalpir, and Dwarka are being upgraded with a variety of modern amenities. These enhancements include landscaped gardens, cafeterias, children’s play areas, amphitheaters, and public facilities, all designed to provide visitors with a mix of entertainment and educational opportunities. The goal is to celebrate and showcase Gujarat’s rich maritime heritage while offering a unique visitor experience.
In total, 75 lighthouses across India are being equipped with similar tourist facilities as part of this initiative. Additionally, Gujarat has established lighthouse museums in Dwarka and Gopnath, which highlight the evolution of lighthouse technology and the history of maritime navigation in India. These developments reflect a commitment to preserving and promoting the state’s maritime legacy while attracting tourists.
