India has officially commenced its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028–29 term, prioritizing maritime security and the safety of seafarers. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the need for a free, open, and rule-based maritime order, underscoring that ensuring safer global sea routes is crucial for international trade and economic stability. With rising threats to global sea lanes, Jaishankar noted that collective action on maritime security is essential.

India aims to safeguard maritime commons and protect seafarers from increasing dangers such as attacks on merchant vessels. Jaishankar highlighted that India’s UNSC tenure will focus on practical measures to enhance shipping safety worldwide. Additionally, countering terror financing will be a significant aspect of India’s agenda, with a push for cohesive global efforts to dismantle financial networks supporting terrorism.

Beyond maritime issues, India seeks to represent the Global South and advance reformed multilateralism. Jaishankar advocates for fairer representation in international institutions that better reflect the realities of developing nations. He also called for enhanced peacekeeping operations and the establishment of global norms to tackle the risks associated with emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. These themes will define India’s narrative in its UNSC campaign.
