India’s Maritime Sector Advances with Green Initiatives and Climate Resilience

India’s maritime sector is evolving into a leader in climate resilience and environmental stewardship, aligning with the Maritime India Vision 2030. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted this transformation during an event hosted by the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, emphasizing that Indian ports are adopting sustainable practices on a global scale.

Shipping Secretary T.K. Ramachandran underscored the importance of gaining experience in handling green hydrogen and related technologies. VOC Port Chairman Sushanta Kumar Purohit stressed the need for collaboration and awareness to secure a sustainable future for India’s maritime industry. He described the event as a convergence of ideas and a collective commitment to sustainability.

In his inaugural address, Vijay Kumar, chairman of the Inland Waterways Authority of India, reiterated the necessity of sustainability in the maritime sector. He noted that to achieve India’s net-zero target by 2070, the NAVIC Cell of the Ministry is coordinating efforts to develop environmentally friendly inland waterways across the nation. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that India’s maritime future is both resilient and sustainable.
