The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has established a new office in Srinagar’s Transport Bhawan, enhancing the Inland Water Transport (IWT) sector in Jammu and Kashmir. The J&K government provided the office space, which is now operational and will oversee all IWT initiatives in the area.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IWAI and the J&K government aims to enhance river navigation infrastructure across three national waterways: NW-26 (River Chenab), NW-49 (River Jhelum), and NW-84 (River Ravi). Upcoming projects under this agreement include the installation of floating jetties at ten locations, dredging to create navigable fairways, and the establishment of night navigational aids alongside regular hydrographic surveys to ensure vessel safety.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, IWAI has implemented various infrastructural developments to establish waterways as a vital growth engine. This collaboration with the J&K government is poised to boost eco-tourism while invigorating the local economy.
The post highlights IWAI’s commitment to advancing inland water transport as a sustainable option for regional development and tourism.
