The ambitious Yamuna waterway project is set to enhance connectivity and promote eco-friendly tourism between the holy towns of Gokul and Vrindavan. Solar-powered boat services are anticipated to launch soon, marking a significant advancement for this initiative. Led by the Uttar Pradesh Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad (UPBTVP) and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the first phase involves constructing eight jetties, with some expected to be completed by the end of May.
In a recent online meeting chaired by IWAI Chairman Vijay Kumar, officials reviewed the project’s progress. The planned 22-kilometer waterway will connect Vasudev Vatika in Gokul to Jugal Kishore Ghat in Vrindavan, featuring eleven jetties in total—three in Mathura and five in Vrindavan. To address low water levels at certain points, a committee of experts will survey potential solutions, while boat registrations will be managed by the local Assistant Regional Transport Office (ARTO).
With an estimated cost of ₹28.35 crore, the IWAI will oversee jetty construction, and the Mathura-Vrindavan Development Authority (MVDA) will develop public infrastructure and access roads. The upcoming solar-powered boat service represents a crucial step toward a cleaner, more efficient transportation option for pilgrims and tourists.
