In India, National Maritime Day is celebrated annually on April 5 to honor the country’s extensive maritime heritage and emphasize the shipping industry’s crucial role in global trade. This observance underscores the significance of the maritime sector in both trade and national security, recognizing its importance for domestic transport and international commerce. It also pays tribute to the contributions of the shipping industry to the nation’s economic development.
The origins of National Maritime Day date back to April 5, 1919, when the Indian vessel SS Loyalty embarked on a historic journey from Mumbai to London. This voyage marked a pivotal moment in Indian maritime history by breaking the British shipping monopoly and showcasing India’s emerging presence in the sector. To commemorate this achievement, National Maritime Day was officially established in 1964.
The day serves to raise awareness about maritime safety, environmental conservation, and sustainable shipping practices. With increasing concerns over ocean pollution and climate change, there is a growing emphasis on adopting greener technologies and responsible navigation. Various events, seminars, and award ceremonies are organized to recognize the contributions of maritime professionals, including the prestigious National Maritime Awards.
In 2026, India marks its 63rd National Maritime Day under the theme “Maritime India – Empowering Progress,” which highlights the sector’s role in economic growth, modernization, and sustainability. Notably, 90% of India’s trade by volume is conducted via sea routes, making maritime transport essential to the country’s economy. With a coastline exceeding 7,500 km, India is also committed to green shipping initiatives aimed at reducing pollution and promoting sustainable maritime practices.
