Amogy, a provider of ammonia-to-power solutions, has expanded its operations into South Korea by opening an office in the Pangyo Techno Valley. This strategic move brings Amogy closer to established investors and partners in the region, including SK Innovation, Samsung Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai, Hanwha, SV Investment, and Korea Zinc. South Korea’s status as an early adopter in ammonia and hydrogen fuel technologies, coupled with supportive national policies for clean tech, influenced Amogy’s decision to establish a local presence. The country held the world’s first auction for electricity generation using hydrogen and ammonia in 2024 under the Clean Hydrogen Production Standard (CHPS) and is advancing grid stability through the Distributed Energy Act (DEA).

South Korea, home to three of the world’s leading shipyards, is a hub for maritime innovation and hydrogen technology development. With ambitious goals to commercialize ammonia-fueled power generation by 2030, South Korea presents a key market for Amogy’s ammonia-based energy solutions. Dr. Stone Zhang, Managing Director in Asia, will lead Amogy’s new office in Pangyo, overseeing key local partnerships and business development in the Asia Pacific region. Zhang brings over a decade of executive experience in the maritime and energy sectors, holding a Ph.D. in Marine and Offshore Engineering and an Executive M.B.A.

Amogy’s entry into the South Korean market aligns with the country’s projected shift towards generating 2% of its electricity from hydrogen and ammonia by 2030, increasing to 7% by 2035. The company is collaborating with leading innovators such as SK Innovation, HD Hyundai Infracore, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hanwha to develop ammonia-fueled solutions for distributed power generation and maritime applications. Following a successful demonstration of its technology in September 2024 on the world’s first carbon-free, ammonia-powered maritime vessel, Amogy is advancing towards commercializing its solutions. With a recent $56 million investment in venture financing, the company aims to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors like global shipping and power generation.
