The 20 Filipino crew members of a ship currently under investigation by South Korean authorities for allegedly carrying cocaine will receive additional legal assistance, as confirmed by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). The Philippine embassy and the Migrant Workers office in South Korea will provide legal counsel to collaborate with the lawyers of the shipping company to ensure the best legal defense for the seafarers. Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac stated that the crew members are in good health and are receiving legal assistance and necessary support while remaining onboard the MV Lutina, a Norwegian-flagged bulk carrier.
Undersecretary Felicitas Bay mentioned that the DMW has taken steps to ensure the welfare and well-being of the crew, with all their basic needs continuously provided by the ship owner. Cacdac also mentioned that the department is reaching out to the families of the crew members to reassure them of government support throughout the investigation. Six family representatives in Metro Manila have been met to assure them of the necessary assistance.
The crew members have not been detained or charged by Korean authorities but have been thoroughly advised by lawyers. The strategy is to guide and advise them throughout the investigatory process and provide the best legal advice and defense. The DMW is working closely with the crew members, their families, and the legal team to ensure their well-being and proper legal representation during this challenging time.
