Hydrex divers successfully reinstalled the bow thruster of a 170-meter container ship during its stop in Rotterdam, avoiding the need for costly drydock changes. By conducting the operation underwater, the team ensured that the vessel could remain on schedule, which was crucial for the ship’s owner.
Upon arrival, the team established a monitoring station next to the ship and began with a thorough inspection of the bow thruster tunnel. Concurrently, they prepared the bow thruster room for the reinstallation of the thruster unit. Since the thruster was fully assembled, it could be installed without requiring a dry environment, which is typically necessary when blades are installed separately.
The diver/technicians skillfully lowered the thruster into the water and maneuvered it into position within the tunnel. After securing the unit, they connected it to the bow thruster room. The operation concluded with the removal of pad eyes and the reinstallation of the thruster tunnel grids.
The team worked in shifts around the clock, completing the task within the designated timeframe. This meticulous planning and execution demonstrated the staff’s expertise and familiarity with such operations, ultimately allowing the ship to sail on schedule.
