Everllence has successfully completed the world’s first conversion of a B&W S90 two-stroke engine to dual-fuel methanol, following successful sea trials on COSCO Shipping Lines’ container vessel, COSCO Shipping Libra. The vessel’s original 11S90ME-C engine was retrofitted to an 11S90ME-LGIM unit, marking a significant milestone in maritime technology.
The project, executed by Everllence PrimeServ in collaboration with COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry, encompassed comprehensive engineering, project management, installation, and commissioning. A dedicated 4S90 testbed engine was established in Japan to validate the S90 engine’s performance with methanol, ensuring readiness for this pioneering retrofit.
Everllence sees substantial potential for further large-bore retrofits, with over 300 S90-class engines currently in operation globally. Michael Petersen, Senior Vice President of Everllence PrimeServ, emphasized the company’s experience, having completed 26 dual-fuel conversions and a robust pipeline for various alternative fuels.
Petersen noted that while achieving full decarbonization requires industry-wide collaboration, this achievement showcases that large-scale conversions are both technically feasible and commercially viable, paving the way for an accelerated transition to sustainable maritime energy solutions.
