A district in Russia’s Sakhalin region is on high alert after a Chinese cargo ship ran aground off the southwest coast of Sakhalin Island. The Chinese bulk carrier An Yang 2, with 20 crew members and carrying 700 tons of fuel oil, 100 tons of diesel fuel, and 1,000 tons of coal, is stranded in shallow waters in the Nevelsky district. Governor Valery Limarenko stated that while there was no fuel spillage or threat to the crew, readiness for any scenario is necessary.

Limarenko mentioned that marine and diving rescuers were unable to approach the vessel due to a strong storm. As a result, decisions regarding unloading the ship or removing it from the shallows will be made once weather conditions improve. The Sakhalin region, which includes Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands, has been the subject of a territorial dispute between Russia and Japan since World War Two.

Soviet troops took control of the Kuril Islands, known as the Northern Territories in Japan, at the end of the war, and the dispute has prevented the two countries from signing a peace treaty. The situation with the stranded Chinese cargo ship highlights the ongoing challenges in the region, with authorities closely monitoring the situation and preparing for potential environmental risks and rescue operations.
