On Sunday, May 24, the Hamburg fire department responded to reports of smoke from a cargo ship docked at Grevenhofkai in the Kuhwerderhafen area. The situation escalated as it was confirmed that a significant fire had broken out in the vessel’s stern, originating from a storage area. The crew of the ship had initiated firefighting efforts before the fire department arrived. Unfortunately, eight individuals sustained serious injuries, including one firefighter and six crew members, with seven requiring hospitalization. One person received immediate medical attention on-site.

The vessel involved has been identified as the Jolyn, a 3,600 dwt general cargo ship operated by Royal Wagenborg. Built in 2007 and registered in the Netherlands, the ship had just arrived from Hull, UK, earlier that day.

Firefighters utilized multiple hose lines and breathing apparatuses to manage the situation, with the city fireboat, Branddirektor Westphal, and divers also deployed. After three hours of intense firefighting, the blaze was extinguished, and the area was inspected for residual heat before the incident was turned over to police for further investigation.
