The Coast Guard has identified a recurring safety issue affecting fixed gas extinguishing systems on vessels. Recently, incidents have arisen where safety pins were left in the service position after maintenance by certified technicians, rendering the systems inoperable during emergencies. Most fixed gas recovery systems have two pins: one is a safety pin that prevents accidental discharge, while the other, known as the Cotter pin, enables manual operation. Understanding this distinction is crucial for maintaining operational readiness.

Vessel owners and operators are urged to take an active role in ensuring their fire suppression systems are functioning correctly. The Coast Guard emphasizes checking operating manuals specific to their systems and not relying solely on service technicians. After maintenance, it’s vital to confirm the proper placement of safety pins and ensure that glass amplifiers are intact and filled with liquid, as any deficiency can compromise the system’s automatic activation.

In addition, during maintenance, owners should familiarize themselves with system operations and attend training sessions in accordance with federal regulations. For further guidance, the Coast Guard advises reaching out to local marine inspectors for additional instructions on fire safety systems.
