Kongsberg Maritime is advancing its mooring solutions for offshore floating structures by developing simplified technologies aimed at reducing costs, complexity, and environmental impact. Building on its patent-pending integrated tensioning and remote pull-in systems, the company is focused on enhancing the lifecycle of mooring systems, which are crucial for the floating offshore wind sector and other industries like oil and gas.

Recent innovations aim to minimize mooring components and eliminate the need for active tensioning equipment in permanent setups. This new approach allows for a controlled connection method that compensates for relative motions between vessels and floaters, enabling safer installation within a wider weather window. The removal of winches and floater-based personnel reduces topside weight, maintenance needs, and enhances safety.

Kongsberg’s refined tensioner technology delivers precise mooring line tensioning, while its cross-tensioning method applies high loads to eliminate construction stretch in fiber ropes without relying on bollard pull, thereby decreasing propulsion and engine power demands. Preliminary estimates suggest potential fuel savings of 70-80% for tensioning operations, contingent on the specific mooring system.

Arild Ånensen, Kongsberg’s program manager for offshore energy, emphasizes the goal of streamlining offshore floater installations. By simplifying processes and introducing smarter connection methods, Kongsberg aims to help operators reduce costs while improving safety and reliability.
