The Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) has launched the Global Liquid Hydrogen Alliance, a new international initiative aimed at promoting pure green hydrogen and liquid hydrogen (LH₂) as a scalable, zero-emission fuel for maritime shipping. This initiative emerges as the maritime industry transitions from aspirations to actionable deployment, particularly following the recent MEPC 84 meeting where the IMO’s Net Zero Framework was solidified. With over 600 hydrogen projects announced globally and significant investments, the challenge lies not in ambition but in the structural coordination necessary to realize these projects.
The Alliance focuses exclusively on pure green hydrogen, differentiating itself from broader hydrogen initiatives that often emphasize blended fuels. Its mission is to establish a credible and transparent evidence base to support policymakers, investors, and shipowners. The Alliance will prioritize creating a verifiable framework for LH₂ technology, advocating for its role as a primary energy carrier, and accelerating market creation through coordinated demand and policy engagement.
LH₂ is particularly suited for long-range maritime applications, offering advantages over other zero-emission fuels in terms of scalability and infrastructure requirements. With existing commercial transport capabilities and ongoing investments in bunkering infrastructure, the Alliance aims to bridge the deployment gap through enhanced technical evidence and commercial frameworks. Organizations across the hydrogen value chain are invited to join as Founding Members to help shape the future of zero-emission shipping.
