Professor Momoko Kitada, a Japanese maritime academic and former seafarer, received the International Maritime Organization’s Gender Equality Award for 2026 during a ceremony in London on May 18, coinciding with the International Day for Women in Maritime. The award recognizes significant contributions to gender equality and women’s empowerment in the maritime sector, endorsed by a high-level panel and the IMO Council.

In her acceptance speech, Professor Kitada reflected on her upbringing and the vital role of education in achieving economic stability for women. She emphasized the importance of knowledge and understanding gender equality through active engagement and discourse. With a PhD in Social Science from Cardiff University, she has been instrumental in promoting diversity and inclusion in maritime education since joining the World Maritime University (WMU) in 2011.

Professor Kitada’s work focuses on creating pathways for young maritime professionals and addressing structural barriers to inclusivity. She has 20 years of research experience in gender equality and actively incorporates gender perspectives into her teaching. Her latest publication, the “Handbook on Gender Mainstreaming in the Maritime Sector,” provides tools for enhancing women’s participation in the industry.

The IMO Gender Equality Award, established in 2022, acknowledges individuals dedicated to promoting diversity in maritime. Alongside Professor Kitada, several nominees received Letters of Commendation for their contributions, highlighting the ongoing commitment to gender balance in the sector.
