The Ulsan Port Authority (UPA) announced a significant milestone on September 28, 2025, with the successful completion of Korea’s first methanol bunkering for a dual-fuel bulk carrier at Ulsan Port. This accomplishment follows the port’s earlier achievements in 2023-2024, when it conducted the world’s first methanol bunkering demonstrations for container ships, solidifying its status as a leading hub for sustainable marine fuel.
The recent operation involved the “Green Future,” a methanol dual-fuel bulk carrier chartered by NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd. The green methanol used in the bunkering was produced by OCI Global and supplied by ITOCHU Corporation, utilizing storage at the OTK Terminal. The bunkering was executed through ship-to-ship (STS) transfer, showcasing the port’s advanced infrastructure.
Conducted at Ulsan New Port’s Southern Breakwater T/S Pier, this operation represents Korea’s inaugural green methanol STS bunkering for a dry bulk carrier. UPA President Jae-young Byeon emphasized the significance of this event, stating that it highlights Ulsan Port’s ability to facilitate commercial-scale green methanol bunkering. He reaffirmed the port’s commitment to leading sustainable marine fuel initiatives as a trusted global hub.
