SK Incheon Petrochem Launches Korea’s First Bio Marine Fuel B30
SK Incheon Petrochem has introduced Korea’s first bio marine fuel, B30, which is a blend of 30% bio-based materials and 70% Straight Run Fuel Oil (SRFO). This initiative aligns with greenhouse gas reduction policies in the shipping sector, aiming to meet the growing sustainability demands of maritime operations.
The B30 fuel, developed through collaboration with JC Chemical and SK Innovation’s Institute of Environmental Science & Technology, complies with international standards set by ISO 8217. Official supply commenced on April 26, 2025, and offers a 25% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional marine fuels. This product has also received certification from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU), underscoring its environmental benefits.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has mandated a 21% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from marine fuels by 2030, making B30 a timely solution. Notably, SK Incheon’s SRFO is refined from ultra-light crude oil in a single process, providing higher energy output and fewer impurities, which enhances fuel efficiency.
Yoon Young-ho, Head of B2B Business Office at SK Incheon Petrochem, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering high-quality, environmentally friendly fuel to both domestic and international shipping companies, positioning B30 as a model for sustainable energy transition in the industry.
