NYK Line, Japan’s premier shipping company, conducted a thorough inspection of one of its car carriers on June 20, involving officials from the Tokyo Fire Brigade, Yokohama City Fire Bureau, and local freight companies. The primary aim was to enhance cooperation and emergency preparedness among ship crews and state agencies, addressing a rise in fire incidents involving car carriers globally. Over 40 participants engaged during the inspection, examining the ship’s design, vehicle loading protocols, and fire safety equipment.

The initiative also focused on safeguarding dock workers during onboard fires, emphasizing the importance of swift and safe evacuations. To address the unique challenges posed by newer vehicle types, such as electric and fuel cell cars, NYK has developed tailored transportation guidelines.

The event featured an interactive discussion, fostering collaboration between maritime teams and coastal emergency services. Participants explored real-life scenarios to refine communication and response strategies during emergencies. This pioneering inspection marked a significant step in fire safety training for NYK car carriers, part of ongoing efforts that have included similar events in the United States, Europe, Singapore, and Sri Lanka.

NYK remains committed to strengthening partnerships with firefighting agencies worldwide to enhance ship safety and ensure rapid responses to potential emergencies at the dock.
