Seaspan has launched Dockboy, a remote-controlled ultra-high pressure (UHP) cleaning tool designed for efficient hull maintenance. This innovative device effectively removes marine growth, anti-fouling paint, and coatings in one operation, ensuring a consistently paint-ready surface. Dockboy will be utilized at both Vancouver Drydock and Victoria Shipyards, enhancing maintenance capabilities across the facilities.
Unlike traditional crawlers, Dockboy maintains better connectivity over uneven surfaces, such as divots and handrail pockets. Chris Welsford, Senior Safety Manager at Vancouver Drydock, emphasizes that Dockboy improves ergonomics for operators by reducing physical strain, vibrations, and noise associated with UHP blasting. This advancement not only enhances safety but also contributes to a quieter working environment.
Barry Kas, Director of Operations at Vancouver Drydock, views the acquisition of Dockboy as a significant investment in the company’s future. It reflects a commitment to upskilling the workforce and developing in-house maintenance procedures. The successful use of Dockboy in late 2025 on a commercial project showcased the team’s capabilities.
This investment is a part of Vancouver Drydock’s broader modernization efforts, which include a new dry dock, an Operations Centre, and improvements to facilities to support its expanding workforce.
