The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has put forward a plan aimed at facilitating the safe evacuation of merchant ships currently stranded in Middle Eastern waters, particularly in the Persian Gulf. This initiative comes in response to a request from the IMO Council, highlighting the need for a structured approach to ensure the safety of vessels in the region.
The proposed evacuation framework is designed as a voluntary mechanism that respects the rights and freedoms of navigation as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and customary international law. It applies to all vessels governed by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea that find themselves confined in the Persian Gulf and wish to leave.
To implement this framework, the IMO plans to utilize the eastbound traffic lane of the existing and established traffic separation scheme. This strategic approach aims to streamline the evacuation process while ensuring the safety of all maritime operations in the area. The initiative underscores the IMO’s commitment to maintaining safe navigation and addressing the challenges faced by merchant vessels in the region.
