Ferry transport in London is entering a transformative phase with a focus on sustainability, marked by the introduction of a zero-emission vessel. The new boat, Orbit Clipper, is being hailed as a game-changer for passengers traveling along the Thames. Launched by Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, this is the UK’s first fully electric, zero-emissions ferry, completing its inaugural passenger trip on December 5. This milestone signifies a new era in sustainable transport for the city.
The Orbit Clipper, designed to carry 150 passengers and 100 bicycles, features a roll-on/roll-off design that allows for automated docking on both sides. It will operate between Canary Wharf and Rotherhithe, providing an efficient and eco-friendly cross-river transport service. Built by Wight Shipyard Co, the vessel received partial funding from the UK government, contributing to Uber Boat by Thames Clippers’ commitment to sustainable transport in London.
In recent years, the operator has introduced three hybrid high-speed vessels to its fleet, significantly reducing emissions and aiming for a 50% cut in carbon emissions by 2035. Sean Collins, CEO of Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, emphasized that the launch of Orbit Clipper is a significant step toward lowering the city’s carbon footprint while maintaining reliable river transport. The new ferry is expected to serve over 20,000 passengers daily, continuing the company’s innovative legacy in the marine sector.
