The United Nations has initiated the first-ever Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035), unveiling an Implementation Plan in New York that aligns policies, finance, technology, and data to promote sustainable transport and advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Under-Secretary-General Li Junhua emphasized the collaborative process that brought together governments, industry, civil society, and academia to strengthen coordination and foster new partnerships.

Sustainable transport focuses on cleaner mobility and safer systems, enhancing access to jobs, education, and healthcare while facilitating the movement of goods. With transport demand projected to more than double by 2050, decisions made in the next decade are crucial for establishing sustainable development pathways. The launch event showcased 83 global commitments, including significant financial resources aimed at promoting clean mobility and zero-emission transport.

Joe Kramek, President & CEO of the World Shipping Council, highlighted the shipping industry’s energy transition as an opportunity for investment in renewable marine fuels and infrastructure. He noted that liner shipping is committing $150 billion to build dual-fuel ships by 2030, designed for low- and zero-GHG fuels. Kramek urged that the ocean segment of supply chains be integrated into the Decade’s efforts to accelerate emissions reductions globally.
