The Global Center for Seyime Decarbonization (GCMD) has launched the world’s first maritime pilot demonstrating an integrated carbon dioxide (CO2) value chain. On June 25, 2025, the pilot involved a two-phase process in which 25.44 tons of captured CO2 was transferred from the container vessel MV Province by Shanghai Qiyao Environmental Technology Co., Ltd. (Smderi-Qet). This CO2 was then transported to a facility in Inner Mongolia for use in producing low-carbon calcium carbonate, essential for sustainable building materials.

This cross-sector initiative highlights the potential of maritime decarbonization and the importance of a complete carbon value chain, which encompasses infrastructure for unloading, transporting, and utilizing captured CO2. The study indicated that using CO2 in concrete production could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by substituting conventional cement.

Navigating regulatory challenges was pivotal for the pilot. By working closely with authorities, GCMD successfully reclassified CO2 from “dangerous waste” to “dangerous freight.” The pilot also entailed collaboration among various stakeholders, including shipping companies, service providers, and regulatory bodies, ensuring an effective demonstration of carbon capture and utilization.

GCMD plans to conduct a thorough life cycle analysis (LCA) to assess emissions related to this pilot and validate reduction claims through DNV’s recognized accounting framework, further solidifying CO2 capture as a vital tool for maritime decarbonization efforts.
