Alfa Laval has reached a significant milestone in maritime decarbonization by securing an order for the world’s first marine boiler system designed for the safe incineration of ammonia emissions. This innovative system, part of a collaborative project with engine designer WinGD and shipyard HD Hyundai Mipo, will be installed on four ammonia dual-fuel vessels for Trafigura, with delivery scheduled for 2027-2028.
As the shipping industry shifts towards ammonia as a zero-carbon fuel, the technology addresses safety concerns related to ammonia’s toxicity and waste gas management. The advanced boiler system functions as an Ammonia Release Mitigation System (ARMS), efficiently incinerating gaseous ammonia and ammonia-nitrogen mixtures generated by onboard equipment. This multi-functional approach reduces costs and space requirements for shipowners.
Alfa Laval’s expertise in alternative fuels, honed through successful innovations with LNG and methanol systems, positions the company as a leader in ammonia combustion technology. The development journey began in 2021, with extensive testing paving the way for commercialization. This pioneering boiler system not only enhances operational efficiency and safety but also serves as a model for future vessels, showcasing the potential for ammonia to be safely utilized in maritime applications.
