bound4blue has successfully installed the world’s largest suction sails on the MV Atlantic Orchard, a specialized juice carrier chartered by Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) and owned by Wisby Tankers AB. The four 26-meter high eSAILs® were fitted during the vessel’s 10-year survey at Astander Shipyard in Spain, ensuring optimal efficiency. The installation process was completed in under a day per unit, allowing the vessel to benefit from simplified FuelEU Maritime compliance and various regulatory advantages. With an expected fuel consumption and emission savings of around 10%, the MV Atlantic Orchard is set to enjoy commercial advantages on its trading routes.
This successful installation marks the third for bound4blue this year, demonstrating the company’s ability to deliver and scale its Wind Propulsion Systems (WPS) technology. The CEO and Co-founder of bound4blue, José Miguel Bermúdez, emphasizes the simplicity and versatility of adopting advanced WPS technology in the shipping industry. The partnership with LDC and Wisby Tankers highlights the potential for substantial fuel and emissions savings, as well as the ease of integrating eSAILs® into various vessel types.
The decision to install WPS on the MV Atlantic Orchard followed a thorough review of emissions reducing and efficiency boosting technologies by LDC’s shipping decarbonisation team. Lloyd’s Register provided an expert assessment before bound4blue’s fully autonomous system was selected. Sébastien Landerretche, LDC’s Global Head of Freight, expresses excitement about this significant step towards a low-carbon maritime industry. The eSAILs® technology offers a typical payback period of less than five years and is suitable for retrofitting across a range of vessel segments, with orders already received from prominent shipping companies.
