Yanmar Power Solutions Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Yanmar Holdings, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first engine manufacturer in Japan to receive both type approval and NOx certificates from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK). These certifications are for their pilot-ignition hydrogen-fueled 4-stroke high-speed engine designed for power generation in domestic coastal vessels, aligning with the Nippon Foundation’s Zero Emission Ships Project.
In 2025, the company amplified its land-based demonstration tests, employing a small quantity of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a pilot fuel in preparation for upcoming operations. Following inspections by ClassNK, Yanmar secured the type approval certificate in October 2025 and the NOx certificate in December 2025, validating that its “Electronically Controlled Gas Only Engine (Hydrogen)” meets regulatory standards for demonstration trials.
Moving forward, Yanmar plans to equip domestic coastal vessels with essential hardware, including two hydrogen engines, aiming to initiate demonstration operation trials in the fall. The company is dedicated to advancing the carbon neutrality of the shipping industry by facilitating the societal adoption of hydrogen engines, which are capable of achieving nearly zero CO₂ emissions.
The type approval certificate ensures that marine equipment meets specified regulations through rigorous assessments, while the NOx certificate confirms compliance with Tier II standards for nitrogen oxides set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
