All 20 Filipino seafarers aboard the M/V MSC Elsa, a cargo ship that sank off the coast of Kochi, Kerala, are safe and awaiting repatriation, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). The incident occurred on May 24, and the seafarers are currently in a local hotel, maintaining communication with their families for emotional support.
The DMW stated that the seafarers are receiving assistance from their employer’s representatives in India. They will remain in Kochi while authorities investigate the sinking of the vessel. To facilitate their return to the Philippines, the employer has requested the Philippine Embassy in New Delhi to issue temporary travel documents, as the seafarers’ passports and Seafarer Registration Cards are still on the ship.
The DMW is coordinating with the Office of Migration Affairs in the Department of Foreign Affairs to expedite this process. The situation remains a priority as the safety and well-being of the seafarers are being closely monitored during this challenging time.
