The Director (Maritime) of a leading voluntary near-miss reporting organization emphasizes that fatigue is a critical yet often overlooked issue in the maritime industry. Recent reports to the organization indicate that fatigue is widespread, even among crews adhering to work and rest regulations. The organization highlights the importance of a new report addressing this problem, noting that fatigue management requires more than just paperwork; companies should foster an environment where crew members can report fatigue without fear and take necessary breaks.

The report underscores that fatigue is a gradual issue, typically arising from ongoing exposure to demanding schedules, inadequate recovery time, and staffing pressures. It notes that many existing crewing models are outdated and fail to account for the increased mental and emotional demands placed on crew members, such as constant connectivity with shore management and tighter commercial schedules.

The reporting organization has received numerous accounts of crew members experiencing disrupted sleep and heightened stress, leading to microsleeps and lapses in concentration. The organization warns that operational safety is often compromised for commercial efficiency, with crewing levels sometimes based on minimal legal requirements rather than actual workload, pushing the system beyond safe limits.
