The Seafarers’ Charity has launched a series of films aimed at aiding seafarers in managing the risks associated with abandonment while at sea. The animated series, titled “Smart Seafaring: A Safe Return,” seeks to educate seafarers on recognizing the warning signs of unreliable vessels, providing them with coping strategies for potential abandonment scenarios, and guiding their loved ones on how to offer support from home.

Recent statistics from the International Transport Workers’ Federation indicate that 2025 witnessed a record high in seafarer abandonment, with 6,223 individuals left stranded across 410 ships, marking a 32% increase from the previous year. The launch of the first film, which focuses on pre-departure due diligence, coincides with the United Nations’ Day of the Seafarer. This observance, initiated in 2011, emphasizes the critical roles that seafarers play in global trade, with the 2026 theme highlighting both the contributions and risks faced by these workers.

Deborah Layde, Chief Executive of The Seafarers’ Charity, expressed her strong disapproval of the unethical treatment seafarers often face at the hands of negligent shipowners. She pointed out that abandonment significantly impacts the physical and mental health of the crew and jeopardizes their ability to support their families financially. The remaining films in this educational series are scheduled for release over the coming months, along with downloadable resources for seafarers and their families, all of which will be translated into multiple languages to cater to a global audience.
