Over 6,000 seafarers globally are currently facing abandonment, prompting The Seafarers’ Charity’s Chief Executive, Deborah Layde, to emphasize the urgency of this hidden crisis. In response, the charity has launched a new film series designed to educate seafarers on how to safeguard themselves, access critical support, and ensure a safe return home.

The issue of abandonment has reached alarming levels, with 2025 marking a record year. This year, the number of seafarers trapped on their ships has nearly doubled compared to the previous year, highlighting a significant plight. According to the Maritime Labour Convention, abandonment occurs when seafarers have not been paid for two months, denied repatriation, or lack basic necessities—conditions that over 6,000 individuals currently endure.

To combat this growing crisis, The Seafarers’ Charity has produced the film series titled “Smart Seafaring. A Safe Return,” which aims to provide practical advice for seafarers before and during their voyages. The initiative encourages them to take proactive measures, such as securing copies of employment agreements and understanding their vessel’s operational history, while also fostering community among affected crew members.

Seafarers play a crucial role in global trade, often working months away from home to support their families and maintain essential supply chains. It is vital to recognize that each abandoned seafarer represents a significant loss, underscoring the need for collective action to address this critical issue.
