Houthi Capture of Perim Island Raises Fears for Global Shipping

In a significant development affecting global shipping, Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement has seized the strategic Perim Island in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, as confirmed by sources from the Yemeni government. The Houthis also captured the nearby coastal town of Dhubab, tightening their control over a key maritime route amidst the escalating Middle East conflict. If the group consolidates its power in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, it could provide Iran with a strategic edge in its ongoing hostilities with the U.S., likely disrupting oil supplies and driving prices higher.

Recent satellite imagery indicated smoke near Saudi Arabia’s crucial East-West oil pipeline, essential for redirecting crude exports amid tensions with Iran and the Houthis. Although Saudi Arabia has not confirmed any incidents related to the smoke, concerns are rising over the security of its oil infrastructure. In August, Saudi crude exports fell to a 30-year low, partially attributing this decline to Houthi attacks on vessels in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, emphasizing the conflict’s impact on global oil markets.

Additionally, Yemeni government forces are planning a counter-offensive to regain lost territory along the Red Sea. The Houthis’ rapid military advance has reportedly been aided by guidance from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, highlighting Tehran’s support for their operations. Meanwhile, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has sought U.S. military assistance against the Houthis, though Washington’s response has been limited to intelligence support rather than direct military engagement, reflecting the complexities of the ongoing conflict and its implications for regional security.
