The Seafarers’ Charity has launched an animated film series titled “Smart Seafaring. A Safe Return,” aimed at educating seafarers about the risks of abandonment. The films address three critical areas: identifying early warning signs of unreliable vessels, developing practical coping strategies for potential abandonment, and demonstrating how families can support seafarers from land.

This initiative comes in response to a troubling surge in abandonment cases, with the International Transport Workers’ Federation reporting that 6,223 seafarers were abandoned across 410 ships in 2025. This marks the fourth consecutive year of increasing abandonment rates, reflecting a 32% rise from the previous year and underscoring deteriorating conditions in maritime labor.

Deborah Layde, Chief Executive of The Seafarers’ Charity, emphasized the harsh realities faced by seafarers who often go to sea to support their families. She condemned the abandonment practices of some shipowners, which can severely impact the physical and mental health of crew members, leaving their families in financial distress.

Coinciding with the Day of the Seafarer on June 25, the first film was released, with additional installments and downloadable resources planned for the coming months. The charity also aims to translate the films into various languages to cater to a global audience.
