VARD, along with 12 research institutes and 50 industrial partners, has received funding from the Research Council of Norway to establish a new research center for renewable energy in the maritime sector, named FME Maritime Energy Transition (FME MarTrans). With a budget of 300 million NOK over eight years, the project aims to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels within the maritime industry. VARD will provide financial support and resources for various projects within FME MarTrans.
The main goals of FME MarTrans are to reduce fuel consumption through renewable energy optimization, improve energy systems on board ships, develop supply chains and port infrastructure for green fuels, and support the development of new technologies with knowledge and business models. The center will focus on research, innovation, and education to drive the green transition in the maritime sector, with activities starting in 2024 and concluding in 2032.
With support from 65 partners, including research institutions and industry companies, FME MarTrans will drive substantial reductions in global emissions from the maritime sector. The center will also facilitate networking, cross-border collaboration, and the application of research findings. By building upon the success of the previous Smart Maritime project, Norway aims to lead the way in sustainable maritime practices and technologies.
