Enova has allocated 65 million euros to five hydrogen projects aimed at developing maritime fuel solutions in Norway. These projects, supported by Enova, are seen as a significant step towards the adoption of hydrogen technology in Norwegian shipping. The funding is expected to boost hydrogen production capacity to 100 MW by 2022, contributing to a reduction of 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. This reduction is equivalent to 5.5% of the national emissions from shipping, based on Statistics Norway data from 2022.
The successful implementation of these projects will require investments in a corresponding number of vessels capable of utilizing hydrogen as a fuel source. Enova’s decision to allocate its largest-ever funding for maritime transport in June 2024 underscores its commitment to establishing a market for zero-emission sea transport. Nils Kristian Nakstad, CEO of Enova, emphasized the importance of supporting these vessels as a means to stimulate demand for alternative fuels and drive the transition towards cleaner maritime operations.
Overall, the support provided by Enova to these hydrogen projects represents a significant milestone in the development of sustainable maritime fuel solutions in Norway. By investing in hydrogen production and promoting the use of zero-emission technologies in shipping, Enova is playing a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and advancing the transition towards a more environmentally friendly maritime industry. The successful implementation of these projects is expected to have a positive impact on both the environment and the economy, paving the way for a greener future for Norwegian shipping.
