The Mumbai Trans Harbor Link, now known as the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewari – Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, is the longest sea bridge in India and is expected to provide faster and seamless connectivity to Mumbai International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport. It will also reduce travel time from Mumbai to Pune, Goa, and South India, as well as improve connectivity between Mumbai Port and Jawaharlal Nehru Port. The bridge, with a total cost of over Rs 17,840 crore, is approximately 21.8 km long, including a 16.5 km section over the sea and a 5.5 km section on land. Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for the bridge in December 2016.
In addition to the Atal Setu, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate the laying of the foundation stone for an underground road tunnel connecting the Orange Gate of the Eastern Freeway to Marine Drive. This 9.2 km long tunnel, which will cost over Rs 8,700 crore to construct, is expected to be a major infrastructure development in Mumbai that will reduce travel time between Orange Gate and Marine Drive. This new infrastructure is expected to greatly benefit the transportation system in Mumbai and improve connectivity in the region.
