Trafigura Group recently completed its first ship-to-ship (STS) ammonia transfer, successfully transferring around 6,000 metric tons of ammonia from CF Industries’ manufacturing site in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. The operation took place in international waters near the port of Ceuta in the Strait of Gibraltar. The Green Power Medium Gas Carrier (MGC) and the Small Gas Carrier, Gas Aegean, were involved in the safe transfer.
Owned by Purus and chartered by Trafigura, the Green Power MGC will deliver the ammonia to Grupo Fertiberia in Spain for fertilizer manufacture. The ship-to-ship operation was carried out by International Fender Provider (IFP) in compliance with current requirements. This milestone marks Trafigura’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices and the clean energy transition in the maritime industry.
With plans to reduce the greenhouse gas intensity of its shipping fleet by 25% by 2030, Trafigura is investing in alternative fuels like low-carbon ammonia. The company is also exploring technologies like onboard emissions capture and efficiency measures to decarbonize the shipping sector. As a leading vessel charterer, Trafigura continues to support initiatives for a low-carbon future in the shipping industry through partnerships and innovation.
