Iran has sharply criticized the recent U.S. economic sanctions, labeling them as “state terrorism” and expressing fears that these measures could exacerbate internal unrest. Amid concerns about societal stability, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has prohibited government actions that might jeopardize “social cohesion.” He urged officials to refrain from discouraging rhetoric and emphasized the importance of addressing the pressing economic challenges faced by the nation, including skyrocketing inflation and unemployment.
The sanctions, which follow six months of conflict, have intensified the strain on Iran’s already struggling economy, where inflation reached a staggering 66%. They are part of broader U.S. efforts to undermine Iran financially, categorized by some officials as an “economic D-Day.” Washington has also warned other countries to sever their economic ties with Iran or face repercussions, a move that Iran contends violates international law.
In response to the increasing pressure, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi highlighted the need for dialogue, asserting that effective diplomacy is feasible if the U.S. retracts its military and economic strategies. As efforts to mediate peace continue amidst the unrest, Iran remains resolute in its stance on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil supplies, which has become a focal point of negotiation and tension in the ongoing crisis.
