Rolls-Royce has introduced a groundbreaking technology in the port of Singapore with the world’s first LNG tug, JMS Sunshine, powered by a hybrid system featuring mtu gas engines. Designed, built, and operated by Seatrium Limited, the 29-meter tug is a significant step towards the Port of Singapore’s commitment to the Maritime R&D Roadmap 2030, focusing on environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
The tug is equipped with two 16-cylinder mtu Series 4000M55RN gas engines and a gas regulating unit supplied by Rolls-Royce. Chiam Toon Chong from Seatrium Marine Services praised the engines for their reliability, ease of operation, and excellent service support. Rolls-Royce’s Head of Power Systems in Asia, Chew Xiang Yu, highlighted the strategic importance of the workboat market and the mtu engines’ ability to meet the demanding requirements of harbour tug operations.
The mtu gas engines on the JMS Sunshine surpass current emission guidelines without exhaust gas aftertreatment, emitting only small quantities of nitrogen oxides. The hybrid system allows for precise manoeuvring and strong bollard pull, with a total power of 4000 kilowatts from the azimuth stern thrusters. Rolls-Royce’s Power Systems division has already secured orders for mtu gas engines for various ships worldwide, including ferries, tugs, and government vessels, with positive feedback on their quiet operation and environmental benefits.
