With women comprising only 2% of seafarers, this year’s theme, “Ocean of Opportunities for Women,” highlights the importance of education, mentorship, and cultural change.

In the maritime industry, strides towards gender equality are visible as companies like Maersk increase the number of female seafarers. The percentage of women in Maersk’s workforce has doubled from 2.3% in 2022 to 5.5% in 2024, with Indian women playing a significant role in this growth.
From 23 to 29 Sept., 2024, the maritime sector experienced key developments, highlighting innovation and sustainability. Notable stories included India’s focus on seafarers’ mental health, Maersk’s gender diversity initiative, and the launch of an automated containership in South Korea, alongside the International Maritime Organization’s World Maritime Day celebrations.
