The Philippines Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) has revolutionized the processing of seafarer certificates through digital transformation, resulting in faster processing times, reduced costs, and elimination of queues. With an average of 4,000 daily applications in 2024, Marina now completes evaluations within 5-7 days and issues certificates within a day, streamlining the process for seafarers.
Marina has introduced the Maritime Safety Plan (MSP) 2025 to enhance safety standards in domestic shipping operations, aligning with the International Maritime Organization’s regulations. The plan aims to promote a strong safety culture, improve governance, and implement advanced navigation systems. Stakeholders gathered to develop actionable strategies for safety enhancement, reflecting a commitment to proactive safety management.
ASEAN member states recently adopted the Regional Strategy on Biofouling Management during the 47th ASEAN Maritime Transport Working Group in Brunei on September 17-18. Led by the Philippine delegation, the draft Regional Strategy was presented by Maritime Industry Authority deputy administrator for Operations Nannette Dinopol. The strategy’s main goal is to maintain healthy marine ecosystems.
