The Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) of Philippines reviewed five draft proposals aimed at updating the STCW Convention to meet current challenges and future maritime industry needs. In a session called “Usapang STCW” held on September 4, Marina’s STCW Office gathered feedback from stakeholders on the proposed revisions to be submitted to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Executive Director Samuel Batalla stressed the importance of inclusivity and forward-looking initiatives in the revision process.
During the forum, key figures like Maritime Industry Development specialist Margie Mataac and MET Standards supervisor Capt. Ronald Sediego discussed various topics, including digitalization of STCW documentation and reducing onboard training requirements using advanced simulators. Other presentations addressed issues such as seafarers’ welfare, training qualifications under the IGF Code, and harmonization measures for improved implementation of regulations.
Representatives from government agencies, maritime education institutions, and manning agencies attended the event, providing crucial feedback to shape the Philippines’ proposals to the IMO. This proactive approach highlights the country’s commitment to contributing to a convention that empowers all maritime stakeholders and addresses the evolving needs of the industry.
