Mormugao Port has achieved a major milestone by becoming India’s first accredited green port, announced by MPA Chairman N. Vinodkumar during a roadshow for India Maritime Week 2025. The port promotes sustainability through incentive-based tariff discounts linked to Environmental Ship Index scores and has initiated a solar power project to reduce its carbon footprint.
The Mormugao Port Authority is launching a transformative dredging project to increase its capacity, deepening the approach channel from 14.4 to 19.5 meters for Capesize vessels. Alongside, Berth 9 will be revamped into a modern multi-cargo facility, enhancing Mormugao’s role in India’s maritime trade landscape. Construction aims to finish within 24 months.
The port of Mormugao has generated Rs. 4.82 crore from cruise tourism under the Cruise Bharat Mission. From October 2024 to June 2025, it welcomed 38 cruise ships and nearly 68,000 passengers. This initiative aims to create 400,000 jobs by 2029, emphasizing India’s potential in the global cruise tourism market.
The Mormugao Port Authority has suspended operations amid a developing cyclonic system off Goa’s coast. The Indian Meteorological Department warned of adverse weather, including heavy rainfall and strong winds. Strict monsoon protocols are in place, prohibiting small crafts and enforcing enhanced safety measures to mitigate risks during this hazardous season.
A team from the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) is set to visit Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) to learn about their pioneering program, “decarbonization ports and shipping.” The MPA’s Harit Shrey initiative, offering incentives for green ships, has sparked interest globally. The delegation aims to study and potentially replicate these strategies worldwide.
Once operational, the project will cover all of the port’s electricity needs and feed excess energy into the state grid via net metering. With a cost of Rs 16.9 billion, at least 10 companies have expressed interest in participating. The solar power plant, supported by MPA and GEDA, will be built on a 7-hectare site within the port area.
